The Indian air force has ceased operations with its remaining English Electric Canberra strike aircraft after 50 years of service which saw the type conduct air strikes on Goa and participate in two wars with Pakistan.
The end of Canberra operations was marked during an 11 May ceremony at Agra airbase attended by chief of the air staff Air Chief Marshal F H Major. The service is believed to have had a final batch of around 10 of the aircraft in service with its 106 Sqn prior to the retirement.
India’s retirement of the English Electric design comes less than a year after the UK Royal Air Force halted operations with its last three Canberra PR9 photographic reconnaissance aircraft, after operating the type for 55 years.
