Japan may acquire six former US KC-130Rs

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of the possible sale of six form US military Lockheed Martin KC-130R aircraft to Japan.

"The proposed sale of aircraft and support will help to modernise the Japanese defence force's ageing cargo aircraft fleet," the DSCA said in a statement.

"The KC-130 will provide Japan with an improved capability for the movement of cargo and personnel in humanitarian missions," the agency added.

The DSCA values the deal at $170 million.

The proposed package includes six KC-130Rs and 30 Rolls Royce T-56-A-16 engines that will be provided as excess defence articles (EDA). It also includes "regeneration, overhaul, modifications and logistics support for those engines", the agency added.

CAE will be the prime contractor for training, while regeneration, overhaul, and modifications will be undertaken by the US government.
