Qantas Airways has increased its fuel surcharge for the first time three years.

The carrier has upped the surcharge on international flights by $20-50 one way.

"This follows a move by other airlines, including Singapore Airlines and British Airways, who have increased their fuel surcharge this year," says Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce.

"We don't do this lightly, and it comes after four fuel surcharge decreases over the past three years."
