Sell what you know, not what you make. That is what the airframers did at the Farnborough air show as they pushed their expertise in systems integration when they found few customers for their metal-bashing skills. Pushing its Air Traffic Management concept, Boeing says its satellite-based plan is far ahead of the FAA's. Boeing ATM president John Hayhurst says it is "already a major systems integrator". Airbus, along with partners EADS and Thales, is following Boeing's lead in this area by creating the Air Traffic Alliance. Airframers are also moving into security systems and applications, with Lockheed Martin vying against Boeing, Raytheon and others.
