On 13 March 2019 the USA essentially completed the global grounding of the Boeing 737 Max, following two fatal crashes involving the type in the space of five months.

Hopes for a quick restoration of services involving the type were quickly dashed. A year - and new leadership team - since the grounding, the Boeing 737 Max remains on the ground, production of the type suspended, a backlog of new Max aircraft parked undelivered and the financial impact on the US manufacturers continuing to rise.
