The Swedish air force has begun flight testing an enhanced tactical situation display for the Saab JA37 Viggen interceptor as part of the aircraft's Mod D upgrade programme. Five aircraft will take part in flight tests. A decision on series production is expected in the next few weeks, says Ericsson Saab Avionics, which developed the unit. The active matrix liquid crystal display was integrated into the Viggen by Saab's General Military Programmes division, and is based on three units used in the JAS39 Gripen. Ericsson Saab Avionics delivered the Viggen's original EP-12 displays between 1976 and 1989 and performed a major upgrade from 1989-92.
