Operators of Antonov An-124 outsize freighters are working on bids to provide six of the type for a renewable seven-year period in response to an expected tender from the German defence ministry. The request will be essentially aimed at only Volga-Dnepr of Russia and Antonov of Ukraine, as they are the only operators with sufficient aircraft. It stems from the 2002 NATO Prague summit in which Germany took on responsibility for acquiring interim strategic airlift capability for the alliance, pending a permanent solution. Both operators confirm they will bid.
