Continental Airlines has become the first North American operator to take delivery of a Next Generation Boeing 737-800 featuring Boeing's new Sky Interior.

Elements of the new interior include sculpted sidewalls, LED lighting and larger overhead bins that retract into the ceiling.

Prior to service entry the aircraft is being flown to Continental's maintenance base in Orlando to be fitted with winglets. Continental says as part of its ongoing fleet modernization plan, it is taking delivery of several more 737s featuring the Sky Interior next year.

Continental states the modern interior gives the aircraft a more open feel while increasing cabin comfort and overhead storage space.

Low-cost carrier FlyDubai took delivery of the first 737 with the new interior in October, followed by Malaysia Airlines accepting delivery of a 737 with the Sky Interior in November.

In October of this year Boeing said 45 airlines and leasing companies have selected the new design.
