MD Helicopters is studying potential qualification of the Hellfire missile on the Explorer following the integration of three different weapon systems on the helicopter for the Mexican navy. Although missiles have not yet been specified by any operator, MD believes the Explorer could easily be adapted to fire the guided missile. Clearance for the navy, which uses the Explorer for drug interdiction operations, was obtained after six days of tests at Fort Bliss, Texas. Cleared weapons include the General Dynamics GAU-19/A .5in calibre Gatling gun, the M2 .50 gun pod and 70mm rockets.
