Canada's MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) has received a $154 million contract from NASA to provide a "potential information and robotic servicing solution" to extend the lifetime of the Hubble Space Telescope. The robotic mission option was originally chosen in place of a Space Shuttle mission following the Columbia accident in 2003. However, a series of recent academic reports recommended the restoration of a Space Shuttle mission because the robotic mission would be too expensive and technologically challenging.
