Despite doubling their spending, organisers have admitted that Le Bourget security is lax. Visitors and vehicles have rolled into the show site unchecked - while security guards looked on.

Disorganisation has plagued the early days, says show boss Jean Luc Joly. On Sunday, Reuters quoted him as saying: "There have been some problems. It took some time for our teams to get used to the procedure."

Despite France's refusal to participate in the war in Iraq, there have been fears of reprisals. Organiser SIAE boosted spending to more than E2 million ($2.4 million).

Between 20 and 30 guards were hired to check cars at each of the five entrances.

On Saturday show attendees, the majority of them contractors, entered with minimal checks. On Sunday morning, cars and vans were allowed to pass unchecked through security gates as guards stood by.

Joly said on Sunday afternoon he was confident security measures were fully in place after the early glitches.

All visitors and their bags are searched, he said, and guards open the trunk and luggage of cars driving in.
