Law enforcement officials have described the severe disruption of flight operations at London Gatwick by drones as deliberate, but not related to terrorism.

All flight activity at the London hub has been suspended while investigations and searches for the perpetrators are conducted.

“Public safety is paramount,” says Sussex county police, which is carrying out a joint search with Gatwick’s operator for the drones sighted overnight.

While the police describe the act as “deliberate”, it adds: “There are no indications to suggest this is terror-related.”

The authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.

Gatwick’s operator says there will be “significant delays and cancellations” to all flights on 20 December.
