Southwest Airlines ground service workers, members of the Transport Workers Union, have ratified an agreement for a new labour contract. Workers approved the deal by a ratio of more than 2:1 though barely half of the TWU employees voted.

Agreement between the union and carrier was finally reached last month after years of talks. Negotiators had previously reached a tentative deal in November 2000 but union members rejected this. The breakthrough came in May when both sides were able to agree new proposals covering issues such as wages, retirement benefits and employee pension plans.
