AMERICAN Eurocopter, Bell Helicopter Textron and McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems (MDHS) are expected to bid for a US Border Patrol requirement for up to 45 light-observation helicopters.

A request for proposals (RFP) is expected to be issued within two months for a light single-turbine, civil-certificated helicopter able to carry at least four people.

Bell is expected to offer its Model 206L-4 LongRanger 4, but may also propose its new 407 light single. Eurocopter is likely to offer the AS350 Ecureuil. MDHS is expected to offer its MD500 light single, the tail-rotorless MD520N or larger MD600N.

The Border Patrol, part of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service of the US Department of Justice, already operates a varied fleet of some 50 helicopters, including a small number of AS350s and MD500s.
