The first tailwheel variant of the Aerostar Yak 52 trainer made its US debut at the Experimental Aircraft Association show.

The IAK-52W has several improvements over the original type. These include a three-bladed Mulbauer MTV-9 propeller replacing a two-bladed propeller; two auxiliary fuel tanks in the wing, which double fuel capacity to 280litres (75USgal) and increase range from 550km (300nm) to 1,200km; and replacement of Russian-built radios with the enhanced Garmin ICOM IC-A200 communication radio.

Romania's Aerostar will begin deliveries within 10 weeks of the $139,000 aircraft.
