The new Defence Electronics business unit of EADS has won a €20 million ($24 million) contract to upgrade 11 military air surveillance radars in the UAE.
The L-band radars have been in service since 1989; their reliability, says EADS, has prompted the UAE defence ministry to modernise rather than replace them.
They will receive modern transmitters, new receivers and signal processors, with the upgrades improving both detection performance and resistance to interference, says the company.
The radars were originally built by Siemens, which was taken over by DaimlerChrysler and which, in turn, became part of EADS.
