Lufthansa Technik has established a joint venture with German engineering firm Pepperl & Fuchs to develop automation technology for the aerospace sector.

The new entity, named "3D.aero", will "research, develop and sell innovative automation solutions", says LHT.

In addition to developing such systems for workshops and factories, the joint venture will provide optical measuring devices plus digital-inspection and image-processing applications.

Mannheim-based Pepperl & Fuchs is a specialist in automation and sensor technology.

LHT says 3D.aero will be located at Hamburg's ZAL TechCenter aerospace research facility – near Airbus's Finkenwerder plant – to avail of opportunities "to network with other aviation companies".

The MRO provider – also based in the city – says 3D.aero will have a "young team consisting mainly of Pepperl & Fuchs employees" alongside graduates from the Hamburg University of Technology.
