Rafael is developing a new medium-range infrared-guided air-to-air missile, tentatively referred to as the Python 5. The Israeli missile manufacturer is believed to have completed initial test firings.
The missile will have an improved seeker, motor and better immunity against countermeasures than the in-service Python 4.
Sources say the new missile will have a much longer range and improved manoeuvrability because of the upgraded motor and a more powerful warhead.
The Python 5 is being developed in co-operation with the Israeli air force, which has expressed a need for a new missile despite deployment of the medium-range, radar-guided Raytheon AIM-120 AMRAAM.
Meanwhile, Israel has made an offer to the Indian defence ministry of 100 air-to-air missiles, including the Python 4 and its radar-guided derivative Derby.
India has signed contracts worth $2 billion with Israel for defence equipment. However, India's plan to buy Rafael/Lockheed Martin Popeye/AGM-142 Have Nap air-to-surface missiles was blocked by the US government due to its US-made components. India has also been negotiating with Israel for the Arrow system, although a co-production agreement with Boeing means Washington DC could block this deal.
