Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion international airport looks set to be the first to be equipped with an area protection system against shoulder-launched missiles.

The Israeli ministry of transport and the civil aviation administration have been briefed on the system and support it.

Raytheon and Rafael have teamed to develop Vigilant Eagle, an area protection system against shoulder-launched missiles. The system is designed to protect airport areas as an alternative to aircraft-mounted countermeasures devices such as flares or direct infrared countermeasures (DIRCM).

Under the teaming agreement, Rafael will develop the sensors and Raytheon the countermeasures. A first demonstration is scheduled in the USA this month and is likely to be followed by the system's installation at the Israeli airport.
