China Aviation Industry I and Rolls-Royce Deutschland have signed an agreement to study the potential use of R-R's BR710 turbofan to power China's proposed ARJ21 regional jet. The aircraft is due to be produced in 70- and 90-seat versions, and will make its first flight in 2005. The memorandum of understanding was signed during German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's visit to China last week. General Electric is also competing for the engine contract with its CF34.
