The US Federal Aviation Administration has approved the second phase of Boeing's global communications, navigation and surveillance system tests in a deal worth a potential $23.2 million over the next two years.

Boeing's Phantom Works will create a new information gathering and dissemination system, known as System-Wide Information Management (SWIM), in the first year of the programme using existing military satellite technology.

Eurocontrol and the International Civil Aviation Organisation are also investigating if SWIM can create a system that can be used simultaneously by airlines and air traffic controllers to increase efficiency.
