The Turkish government is believed to have selected a pre-owned Airbus A319 Corporate Jetliner (ACJ) as the first of three VIP-configured business jets that will be used to transport senior government officials.

Plans call for a widebody business jet and up to two large-cabin types to replace ageing VIP Gulfstream IVs.

According to sources, the ACJ is one of the four now owned by the Italian air force. Turkish flag carrier THY, which has been appointed by the government to oversee the renewal programme, has approved the aircraft, which will be refurbished if the go-ahead is given.

Government officials say THY is continuing to evaluate the Airbus A330 and A310-300 for a VIP role. Turkey is continuing negotiations with a clutch of manufacturers to replace the air force-operated GIVs. Types under evaluation include the Bombardier Global Express and Gulfstream G550.

Meanwhile, Turkey has signed an agreement with Sikorsky for the purchase of an S-92 helicopter for prime ministerial transport. The rotorcraft will be operated by the Turkish police.
