US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials have downgraded Ukraine's safety rating to Category 2, after determining the country does not comply with ICAO standards.
Ukraine's downgrade is the result of a reassessment of the country's CAA. This was carried out in October 2004 by FAA officials under the agency's International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) programme.
The FAA says it will "periodically review the situation with the intention of encouraging improvements that will qualify Ukraine for a Category 1 rating".
A Category 2 rating is issued when a country lacks the ability to maintain oversight standards or is judged to have a CAA that is deficient in technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping or inspection procedures.
