Micro Aerodynamics, the Washington-based modification specialist, has obtained US Federal Aviation Administration supplemental type certification for a micro vortex generator (VG) kit for the Mooney M20 family that reduces stall speed by 8%.
The VGs, each measuring 25mm square and curved to suit local airflow conditions, are applied to the leading edges of the wing, rudder and elevator. A total of 98 VGs are located aft of the wing leading edge, 34 are mounted on the vertical stabiliser and 48 are located beneath the horizontal stabiliser. Micro Aerodynamics says the kit, which sells for $1,450, allows roll and pitch control to be effective into the stall, and take-off and landing roll is reduced.
The VGs, which are applied in about one day using Loctite, do not affect high-speed cruise because the improved flow at the trailing edge compensates for the slight drag increase, says the company, which adds that the devices do not collect ice as they are well aft of the accretion zone.
