Vigilant Eagle uses a grid of infrared staring arrays to detect and track a missile and relay data to a command and control unit. This commands a microwave phased-array to project a small-diameter beam (roughly 1°) on to the target. The resulting electromagnetic energy confuses the missile’s electronic circuits, deflecting it from the aircraft. The system can also calculate the missile launch point.
