Mars Exploration Rover, Spirit, reached a milestone on 3 January having spent one year operating on the Red Planet. Spirit and its sister craft, Opportunity, which landed on 24 January 2004, successfully completed their planned three-month primary missions and have astounded scientists by their longevity.
