AIDC has developed a single-seat attack variant of its AT-3 two-seat trainer. Some AT-3A trainers are being upgraded to AT-3B close-support aircraft, with Westinghouse APG-66 radar, head-up display and 1553B databus.
Ching-Kuo Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF)
Production of the IDF was halted in October 1995 over concerns about the aircraft's fuel system. Aircraft were withdrawn from service for examination. The aircraft has since been reintroduced. Deliveries of series production IDFs began early 1992, although with Taiwan's purchase of 150 Lockheed Martin F-16A/Bs, the IDF programme has been cut back, and development of an improved variant cancelled.
Powered by twin, locally produced, AlliedSignal Garrett TFE1042/F125 reheated turbofans, the Ching-Kuo was designed with assistance from General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) and resembles a heavily modified F-16, with intakes mounted F-18-style on the fuselage sides below long wing-leading-edge extensions. The Ching-Kuo is optimised for the air-superiority and air-defence roles, but can be used for anti-ship missions. The armament includes an internal 20mm Vulcan rotary cannon and Sky Sword I air-to-air and Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles. Up to 100 production aircraft, including two-seaters, are required to replace Lockheed F-104s and Northrop F-5Es .
