Air Berlin and Austrian partner Niki have confirmed their selection of the CFM International CFM56 to power 70 firm and 40 optioned Airbus narrowbodies ordered in December. CFMI estimates the value of the deal at $1.5 billion. The German carrier now operates a large fleet of CFM56-powered Boeing 737s, while Niki operates five Airbus narrowbodies equipped with the rival International Aero Engines V2500. Sixty of the newly ordered A320s will be delivered to Air Berlin and 10 will go to Niki.
