AIR NEW ZEALAND (ANZ) is to begin once-weekly Boeing 767-300 flights between Sydney and Bangkok from 8 November, under rights awarded before the Australian Government's freeze earlier this year on the granting of additional fifth-freedom rights to the New Zealand carrier.
The new service follows the carrier's entry to the Sydney-Los Angeles market in November 1994. It now flies five non-stop flights weekly on that route. Under existing rights, ANZ can fly a total of 19 Boeing 767-equivalent services from Australia to any of nine Asian destinations, as well as five direct Sydney-Los Angeles services. The additional Bangkok flight brings the total to 15.
ANZ's regional general manager Australia, Garry Court, says that the Bangkok services were the first new flights by ANZ between Sydney and an Asian destination, following the carrier's successful development of Brisbane as a major regional hub for flights to Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, Bangkok and New Zealand.
