Russian carrier Red Wings has introduced a second restored Tupolev Tu-214 to its fleet, part of an effort to increase narrowbody capacity with domestically-sourced aircraft.

Red Wings has identified the twinjet, powered by Aviadvigatel PS-90A engines, as RA-64549.

It was formerly operated by Transaero, a Moscow-based airline which primarily operated foreign aircraft types but which collapsed in 2015.

Red Wings says the airframe has “successfully passed the full cycle of airworthiness restoration activities”, and “fully complies” with safety and comfort requirements.

Addition of the ex-Transaero twinjet brings Red Wings’ restored Tupolev fleet to three

The Tu-214 is able to transport up to 210 passengers.

“Specialists updated the key systems of the aircraft during the work,” says Red Wings fleet operations department director Andrei Volkov. “A full diagnostics and the necessary modernisation of all units and assemblies of the airliner were carried out.”

He says the twinjet will be used on routes to Georgia and Israel.

Red Wings, which primarily uses Yakovlev Superjet 100s, has already received an initial restored Tu-214 as well as a refurbished Tu-204. Its Sky Gates division has also been acquiring Ilyushin Il-96-400T freighters.
