Alcatel Space has won contracts to build two communications satellites. The French manufacturer is to produce a direct- broadcast satellite, Chinasat 9, for China Satellite Communication, and deliver Galaxy 17 to US operator PanAmSat. The 4,500kg (9,910lb), 11kW Chinasat 9 will be based on the Alcatel Spacebus 4000 C1, with 22 Ku-band transponders. The 4,100kg, 9.5kW Galaxy 17, based on the Spacebus 3000 B3, will have 24 Ku-band and 24 C-band transponders.
