THE USE OF new techniques for processing raw materials could reduce the cost of manufacturing aircraft structures by up to 30% over the next few years, according to aerospace aluminium-alloy producer Alcoa.
The company says, that development of integrally stiffened panels, made from next generation alloys and big machined parts, each replacing several smaller components, will reduce considerably cycle times and production costs for airframe manufacturers.
Alcoa says that closer links between material suppliers and manufacturers, and new modeling tools, will result in structures "highly optimised" for cost and performance.
