Teledyne Continental Motors' (TCM) first full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system for piston engines is scheduled for certification by the end of the year. First deliveries of the $4,000 retrofit kits are planned for January.

The single-lever FADEC controls ignition and fuel timing, and adjusts the fuel-air mixture seamlessly throughout the engine's power range, says TCM. Although the system will only be available for installation on normally aspirated four-cylinder engines with fixed-pitch prop, two additional versions for six-cylinder powerplants are under development, designed to control engines with constant-speed propellers.

Service entry is planned for the first half of next year.
