Temporary heliport specialist ATC Trading converted the helipad at the Silverstone motor racing circuit into a fully licensed twin runway airport for last weekend's British Grand Prix.
ATC Trading, a subsidiary of ATC Lasham, provided a fully staffed air traffic control tower to the heliport to ease congestion at the former single pad air-to-ground station, which struggled to cope with 4,000 movements on race day in 2001.
The company provided temporary fire cover, security, refuelling and fixed-base operations.
The facilities handled around 40% fewer movements than in 2001 due to improved road links and a conflicting major golf tournament in the UK. ATC Trading recently equipped the temporary heliport for the UK's Glastonbury music festival. Operations manager James Ford says the company aims to win contracts for at least three major sporting and cultural events next year.
