The Bedek division of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) has opened its Boeing 737-300/400 passenger-to-freighter (PTF) conversion line. Work has begun on the first two 737s and the division expects to receive its US Federal Aviation Administration supplemental type certificate by the end of May.

David Arzi, general manager of IAI Bedek, says conversion contracts have been signed for 19 737s, with 50 options. Customers include GE Capital Aviation Services and an unnamed European cargo airline. "In 2003 we plan to convert 15 aircraft of all types, increasing to 20 next year," says Arzi.

The division aims to launch its 747-400 PTF conversion programme in June.
