Former Alitalia managing director and chief executive Giovanni Bisignani will replace Pierre Jeanniot as director general and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Bisignani joins IATA on 13 May, and takes over in June when Jeanniot retires after nine years in the job.
Bisignani was head of Alitalia from 1989 to 1994. He has also been chairman of the Association of European Airlines and Galileo International. For the past 15 months, he has been president and chief executive of European airline-owned internet travel-portal Opodo, overseeing launches in Germany and the UK, with France to come on line in April. Jeanniot becomes IATA director general emeritus.
