Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has become the latest operator to resume scheduled service to Haiti following the suspension of flights after an earthquake struck the country on 12 January.
Spirit recommenced daily Airbus A319 service between Fort Lauderdale and Port-au-Prince on 3 March.
Spirit will soon be joined by Air Canada in Haiti after the Canadian carrier restarts Montreal connections to Port-au-Prince on 9 March. Haiti's Toussaint Louverture International airport banned commercial flights beginning 19 January.
Spirit and Air Canada follow American Airlines in resuming Haiti operations. The legacy carrier restarted twice daily flights between Miami and Port-au-Prince on 19 February, and American says it was the first carrier to resume commercial service to Haiti following the earthquake.
American also on 19 February restarted a single daily flight from Fort Lauderdale and four weekly flights from New York John F. Kennedy International airport.
In addition to mainline operations, regional carrier American Eagle will launch new service on 12 March between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Port-au-Prince using ATR-72 turboprops. The service will include daily nonstops from San Juan and two connecting flights through Santo Domingo and Santiago in neighbouring Dominican Republic.
