Claude Burgio has been appointed president of Lockheed Martin Telecommunications, of Bethesda, Maryland, with effect from 15 October. He replaces Russell McFall, president since 1995 and due to retire in March 1998, after 31 years. Burgio was most recently vice-president of engineering for the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization.

Gulfstream Aerospace, of Savannah, Georgia, has appointed Vincent Hrenak vice-president for material. Hrenak, a former US Air Force colonel, was most recently director for subcontracting and aerospace materials at Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems and Sensors division following Northrop Grumman's acquisition of Westinghouse, where he had worked since 1989.

Michael Mayer has been appointed director of international sales at components supplier Avatar Alliance, of Atlanta, Georgia. He was formerly director of West Coast sales. Brian Postel will take on responsibility for West Coast sales in addition to his duties of director of East Coast sales, becoming director of sales for North America. John Knapp joins the company as manager of international sales, reporting to Mayer. He was formerly with the International Aviation Support Group and Airmotive.

The US Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Standards Service has appointed Richard Gordon deputy director. He was formerly manager of the flight-standards division for the Alaskan region. Quentin Smith will head the Air Transportation division. Smith, an ex-air force pilot, is a former aviation-safety inspector and assistant manager of the division. Ava Mims, now special assistant to the director of the aircraft-certification service, will manage the aircraft maintenance division. Robert Wright is to manage the technical-programmes division. He was formerly manager of the FAA's general-aviation and vertical-flight office.

The City of Chicago Department of Aviation has named Erin O'Donnell deputy commissioner of Midway Airport. With the department since 1986, she has been managing the airport since January, having formerly been a senior airport-properties representative in the real-estate division.

Roy Norris, formerly president of Raytheon Aircraft, has formed a management consultancy, Norris Consulting, based in Savannah, Georgia.
