David McMillan is the new director general of Eurocontrol, the European organisation for the safety of air navigation, following the passing of the baton from Victor Aguado, who stepped down on 31 December having been in the job since January 2001.

Formerly the UK’s director general of Civil Aviation, a post he held from April 2004, McMillan also held posts as first vice president of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), and spokesman for Europe on aviation and environment at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

He has held a range of posts in the UK's Department of Transport, including director of strategy and delivery and director of rail restructuring. He was also president of Eurocontrol's Council from 2004-2006.

McMillan's role at the Department of Transport is open to applicants from outside the civil service.
