QinetiQ is to open up its Farnborough-based altitude chamber for commercial pilots and cabin crew trainers to enable them to experience rapid decompression and hypoxia, it was announced yesterday.
"The rationale behind it is that if you have somebody who has actually experienced rapid decompression, they will be able to react much quicker in the event of the real thing happening," said Dr Michael Glanfield, aviation medicine specialist with QinetiQ. "In actual fact the experience is not so terrible."
