French diesel engine manufacturer SMA has filed for bankruptcy protection as the cost of certificating the 230hp (170kW) SR305-230 diesel-cycle engine in the USA has brought the company to its knees. The firm expects the situation to be short lived as a shareholder has pledged to increase its investment.
