EasyJet has given up its interest in Alitalia.

The UK low-cost airline had been discussions with Italian rail operator Ferrovie and US carrier Delta Air Lines about potentially forming a consortium to take over the Italian flag carrier, but has now decided to "withdraw from the process", it says.

EasyJet has not given a reason for its decision but says it remains "committed to Italy" and will continue to invest in the country.

Ferrovie said in February that it planned to begin talks on the future of Alitalia with EasyJet and Delta.

SkyTeam member Alitalia has been up for sale since 2017.
