UK budget carrier EasyJet is to launch operations from Birmingham International Airport in the UK, initially serving the Swiss city of Geneva and Grenoble in France.

EasyJet will launch daily services between Birmingham and Geneva on 14 December. This will be joined by a twice-weekly Grenoble link on 22 December.

Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK. Citing the airport’s large catchment area and high demand for budget flights, EasyJet says it is expecting to carry 45,000 passengers in its first season from the airport.

EasyJet UK regional general manager David Osborne says: “Our expansion in Birmingham reflects our commitment to growth across the UK. We recognise the strong demand for low fares with convenience and Birmingham's great potential.”

With the new Birmingham flights, EasyJet will serve 13 destinations in the UK and 79 across its network.

On 13 December EasyJet will also add services between Bournemouth and Grenoble, joining an existing Geneva link. EasyJet says the three new routes will bring the total number served by the airline to 300 for the first time.

Birmingham has a strong budget carrier presence, attracting operators such as BMIbaby, Flybe, Hapag-Lloyd Express, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, SkyEurope Airlines and Thomsonfly.
