Elbit Systems and several European countries currently flying its joint helmet mounted cueing system (JHMCS) have performed a series of successful night flight demonstrations with the digital eye piece (DEP) night vision cueing and display system.

According to the company, this add-on transforms existing helmet-mounted displays and night vision goggles into smart helmets, providing pilots with daytime cueing and display capabilities during night operations. Its integration requires no changes to aircraft installation or software, the company says.

It adds that the DEP is a simple plug-and-play solution that improves situational awareness and meets the operational needs of military aviators. DEP can be installed on board any fielded JHMCS, digital JHMCS or JHMCS-II.

The aim of the flights was to demonstrate the system’s performance at night, including air-to-air and air-to-ground scenarios, when effective flight missions cannot generally be executed. A variety of international air forces participated, flying Lockheed Martin F-16 aircraft.

Elbit says the feedback was very positive and the pilots emphasised the contribution of the system to night flight safety and effectiveness.

The DEP was developed in co-operation with Elbit Systems of America and Rockwell Collins through their joint venture, RCEVS.
