Air Canada has named former Austrian Airlines Group chief Vagn Sorensen as its new chairman, succeeding David Richardson.

Sorensen has previously served in various senior executive positions, notably at Star Alliance airlines including Scandinavian Airlines and BMI.

Richardson, who has chaired Air Canada since 2008, is retiring after the carrier's annual general meeting on 5 May – at which point Sorensen will become chairman, conditional on his re-election as a director on the board, says the airline.

Sorensen was appointed to the Air Canada board in 2006 and heads the human resources and compensation committee.
