Experimental aircraft owners have received US Federal Aviation Administration permission to rent or lease their aircraft for transition training and flight reviews.
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), which held its annual AirVenture exhibition from 24 July-1 August, the National Association of Flight Instructors and Small Aircraft Manufacturers Association asked the FAA for an exemption from rules preventing the lease of experimental aircraft for training.
The FAA expands an exemption covering the use of amateur- and kit-built aircraft, the EAA says. It expects the exemption will improve the safety record of experimental flying. "Both FAA and the [US] National Transportation Safety Board note that insufficient training is one of the leading causes of preventable accidents in new experimental aircraft," it says.
Owners are still barred from renting out aircraft for other uses, such as pleasure flights.
The EAA show report will be published in our 7-13 August issue.
