Lagos-based GIG Aviation is to acquire two ATR 72-500 freighters as part of plans to expand its logistics network in Africa.

The company is the airline arm of Nigerian logistics firm GIG Group, and the turboprop acquisition represents its foray into air cargo operations, says ATR.

GIG Aviation chief Adetoro Fowoshere says: “We are expanding rapidly through local branches, notably in Nigeria, and the entry into service of these aircraft will be significant in allowing us to expand operations with economic efficiency and reliability, key factors for an airline. With our ATR aircraft, we will continue to meet the cargo needs of communities with increased capacity.”

There are around 140 ATR converted freighters operating globally, making up a third of the global regional freighters.

ATR also manufactures purpose-built ATR 72 freighters, the first of which has been delivered to cargo giant FedEx in late-2020.
