S7 Airlines has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 Max, the initial example of the re-engined type for a Russian operator.

The Oneworld alliance carrier states that the twinjet, a Max 8 variant, will be stationed in Novosibirsk and deployed on routes this week to Moscow and Chita.

S7 adds that the aircraft – fitted with 176 seats including eight in the business-class cabin – will be used by its Globus operation, which is already a 737 operator.

Globus chief Vadim Klebanov says the new Max 8 has been acquired through US lessor Air Lease, adding that it will provide “greater comfort” and lower noise levels.

Powered by CFM International Leap-1B engines, the aircraft (VQ-BGW) was delivered from Seattle to Novosibirsk via a transpacific flight and transit through the eastern Russian city of Magadan.

S7 is intending to take 11 737 Max jets over the next two years. The airline was also the first in Russia to receive the Airbus A320neo, the re-engined version of the A320, when it took delivery of a BOC Aviation-leased jet last year.
