"Dimpled" tyres were introduced to provide a rough and ready index of tread wear. The US Air Force have long been concerned with the need to determine with greater precision the point at which a tyre is worn to the safe limit. For more than a year the BF Goodrich Co have been delivering to the USAF high-speed jet tyres with a white undertread. These have proved most successful, and the company are now experimenting with undertreads that are red, green or orange.

United Data Control Inc of Pasadena, Cal, has an FAA contract for a crash-proof cockpit voice recorder based on a continuous 30min loop of tape stored in a random pattern in a sealed chamber. It records four channels continuously, can be tested without infringing the crew's privacy and is housed in a one-third ATR rack-mounted unit stressed against 100g, 2,000ºF fire for half an hour, 36hr immersion in sea water and accidental erasure by lightning strike or short circuits. United Data Control also make a one-hour, closed loop tape recorder for aircraft crash recording.
