Germany's commitment to the Airbus A400M is still far from assured, despite its decision on 12 December to commit to the tactical transport aircraft. The German government previously agreed to purchase 73 aircraft, but the parliament has budgeted only DM10 billion ($4.6 billion) to purchase the aircraft, enough for just 40-50 aircraft. Germany has committed to the full 73, but with the caveat that parliament will have to provide the rest of the funds in the 2003 budget, which will be drawn up in autumn 2002 and preceded by a general election. The German Chancellor's SDP party considers the A400Mimportant proof of its commitment to Europe and necessary to the Bundeswehr's transition from a homeland-defence to an expeditionary/peacekeeping force.
